New E-Bike Tariffs: What You Need to Know

New E-Bike Tariffs: What You Need to Know

In 2025, e-bikes are continuing to grow in popularity, but as the industry matures and becomes bigger, complexities regarding laws impacting the industry will impact it. Especially so in this year's politically driven landscape, e-bikes will have come upon the tariffs looming ahead.

Understanding the implications of the trade disputes and navigating through the new demands will help you make more informed decisions.

What are Tariffs

Tariffs are taxes that are imposed by the government on imported goods, usually implemented to protect goods in domestic industries. The intent is to make imported goods more expensive, therefore giving an incentive for consumers to purchase domestic goods instead. However, these tariffs can sometimes start trade wars, making things very expensive for everyone.

President Trump has promised to introduce import duties against some of America's largest trading partners. These tariffs will boost American manufacturing, jobs, and grow the economy.

E-Bike Tariffs in 2025

Looming ahead in 2025 are tariffs by the Trump administration, proposed at 10% on Chinese goods. As a majority of e-bikes and components are manufactured in China, this tariff is expected to impact not only consumers, but also manufacturers and retailers.

It’s crucial to understand that these tariffs aren’t paid by Chinese manufacturers, but by the American companies importing the bikes. This raises costs for US e-bike retailers, which often results in higher prices for consumers.

With the introduction of an additional 10% import tariff, US e-bike brands will have to decide whether to absorb the added costs or pass them on to consumers, which could lead to price increases for many popular models.

Although tariffs are not new to goods from China, these new tariffs will continue to make things difficult for the industry, even with the tariff exemptions throughout the years. In fact, there is even an additional 25% tariff on battery packs made for e-bike use set to start in 2026. Not only are e-bikes targeted, their components will be subject to tariffs as well.

With all these new tariffs, many companies are considering taking steps to mitigate the impact on these new tariffs by diversifying supply chains and moving production to other countries such as those in Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia) in order to save on costs. But with China being such a powerhouse in manufacturing, what will most likely occur is applying for tariff exemptions, though there is no guarantee exemptions will be granted.
